A high-efficiency fireplace located on the first floor uses wood, a Renewable resource if managed properly, to supplement the heat from the geothermal pumps. The unit is capable of providing most of the heat load for the home as a back-up measure. Unlike a conventional fireplace, the unit draws air from outside the home for combustion. Conventional fireplaces can actually remove more heat from the home than they produce by drawing inside air and the heat it contains up through the chimney. With the aid of an air circulator, and exhaust fans on the second level, heated air can be moved throughout the home. The fireplace also features a catalytic combuster, to reduce emissions to near zero.
